The Zanzibar Gender Coalition (ZGC) was established in 2005 after an assessment of advocacy capacities in Zanzibar. This assessment, coordinated by the Ministry for Social Welfare, Youth, Women, and Children Development with support from UNFPA,
brought together fourteen NGOs. These organizations, all working on various aspects of human rights—particularly gender equality, women’s empowerment, and social justice—joined forces to create a strong civil society group. The Coalition was envisioned to serve as a watchdog, monitoring government practices and ensuring accountability, especially on issues of human rights and gender-based injustices. In June 2010, after five years of operation, ZGC was officially registered under the Society Act No. 6 of 1995, with registration number 822. The Zanzibar Gender Coalition is a non-governmental, non-partisan, and non-profit organization. In 2019, in response to government requirements for re-registration of NGOs and CBOs under the Society Act using an online system, ZGC complied and secured a new registration number, Z0000184599.
Our mission is to drive gender transformation across governance, society, leadership, policies, and practices at all decision-making levels. We achieve this through advocacy, capacity building, information sharing, and research, empowering women, youth, and marginalized groups to effect social, political, and economic change.
A conscious and prosperous society that upholds and respects the basic human rights and dignity of all citizens, ensuring gender equality and social justice at every level.
The overall objective of the Zanzibar Gender Coalition is to advocate for gender-related human rights and promote the empowerment of women, youth, and marginalized groups.
